This rules package is intended to be used as a sort of “local equivalent” to the package provisioned by ROAR for rear-wheel-drive Short Course truck R/C offroad racing. It is designed to provide a class of racing that is competitive, affordable, rewarding, and challenging, but most of all fair to all competitors and true to the spirit of Short Course offroad racing.

INSPECTION

We will use the “honor system” for inspecting vehicles and this goes to any person participating during the race day. Ultimately, it is the duty of Midwest Nitro Series officials and track stewards to maintain that all vehicles comply with the rules listed in this document, and any issues should be brought to their attention.

Vehicles that are declared during registration to not be in compliance with MW-SCT rules may still compete and be scored for the race day, but will not receive championship season points.

Vehicles found not to be in compliance with MW-SCT rules when competing in a qualifying (“heat” race”) round will forfeit their time for that round and be asked to make appropriate changes for the next round of competition to bring the vehicle back into compliance. These vehicles are subject to close inspection before moving onto the track for the next round of racing.

Vehicles found not to be in compliance with MW-SCT rules when competing in a main event will forfeit the race day entirely as well as any championship season points they may have earned as a result of their finishing order

CHASSIS

Any 1/10th electric Short Course chassis is allowed. Regardless of actual size relation to a 1:1 scale vehicle, “1/10th” refers to the current standard in electric 2WD Short Course trucks (i.e., no electric-converted 1/8th bigblock nitro chassis, ex: Associated SC8, 1/8th Buggy adaptations, etc.). Chassis may be either flat-bottom (ex: Associated SC10) or highrider (ex: Traxxas Slash). Aftermarket chassis, including those which may convert a highrider truck to a flat-bottom (ex: ThunderTech Outlaw chassis for Traxxas Slash) or vice-versa, are allowed.

Chassis configuration is open, with exceptions to the safety and containment of the battery. Batteries must be securely fastened to the chassis and must not be exposed from underneath the truck.

Cage-style chassis as well as custom-built ground up chassis are also allowed, provided they meet the other basic requirements above.

There is no minimum weight requirement

POWERTRAIN

Battery: Vehicles are limited to one battery pack

Nickel-composed battery packs (NiCd or NiMH) are limited to a maximum six-cell sub-C packs (7.2v nominal). There is no milliamp-hour (mAh) limit

Lithium-composed packs (ex: LiPo) are limited to a maximum 2-cells-in-series (or “2S”, 7.4v nominal) packs sheathed in a hard plastic case. Any number of cells-in-parallel may be used. There is no milliamp-hour (mAh) limit

Speed Control (ESC): There are currently no rules concerning the make, model, or performance specifications of ESCs to be used. Mechanical speed controls (MSCs) are also allowed

There are currently no rules concerning the make, model, or performance specifications of ESCs to be used. Mechanical speed controls (MSCs) are also allowed

Motor: Vehicles are limited to one drive motor

Brushed motors are limited to ROAR-legal 27-turn 24° locked-timing 540 sized motors, with the exception that bushings may be replaced with ball bearings if desired

Brushless motor systems are limited to ROAR-legal 17.5, and it is not required that the ESC match the make/model of motor

Unaltered Ready-To-Run motors (ex: Traxxas Titan 12 turn 550) are also allowed to compete. “Unaltered” refers to disassembling, modifying, and reassembling the motor in an effort to significantly increase its performance. Regular maintenance tasks, such as replacing brushes and cutting the commutator, are permitted.

Transmission: Vehicles must be rear-wheel-drive. Four-wheel-drive vehicles may compete for points if it can be proven to a Midwest Nitro Series official or track steward that the front tires have been visibly disconnected from the drivetrain and will not receive influence from any power source

Direct-drive vehicles are not allowed. There must be a minimum of four gears in running order between the motor and the rear half-shafts, including the pinion and spur gears. Gears related to the internal action of a differential are not to be included in this count. Solid-axle vehicles are an exception to this rule, although one pinion and one spur gear must be in place between the motor and the driveshaft

Rear Gears (Differentals): Any style or construction rear gear may be used, including open (or “spider”), planetary, limited-slip (or “ball”), slip-spool, or solid spool.

Dust covers: Full dust covers must be in place on any gears that would otherwise be exposed (ex: the pinion and spur gears on a Stealth-style 3-gear transmission). This rule is in place to prevent any injury to corner marshals during a race.

SUSPENSION

Any style of front or rear suspension geometry is allowed, including independent, solid axle (linked or leaf-sprung), trailing independent, or crossed (such as a 1:1 style Ford I-Beam). Any style shock absorber and spring may be used, and any form of positioning (ex: inboard cantilever as seen on the Traxxas Slayer) may be used. Shocks do not have to match the vehicle they are installed on, and there are no restrictions on ride height or travel range

WHEELS

Wheels must have the Short Course standardized 2.2/3.0x1.65” rim shell. There are no limits to backspacing, as long as the resulting overall track width of the vehicle is within reason compared to the body’s fenders and bedsides. Any means of securing the bead may be used.

We will put an exception in place for the first-generation Traxxas Slash wheels that used a 2.2x1.65” rim shell, along with the early Pro-Line Epic beadlocks, etc.

TIRES

Due to the difficulty in exactly defining what consists of a “Short Course” tread pattern, the MW-SCT class will enact a listed tire rule. We’re trying to stick with scale-appearing block tread tires, as opposed to the pins, ribs, and fuzzies used on Stadium Trucks. As a rule-of-thumb, if the tread pattern would be streetable on a 1:1 truck, it will be allowed for use in MW-SCT competition. The list of allowable tires will be updated regularly as new tires come to market. Competitors are encouraged to bring new tires to the attention of Midwest Nitro Series officials at a race event; however it’s strongly recommended that competitors also bring a set of approved tires.

Approved Tires for use in MW-SCT:

  • Traxxas #5871 Off-Road (Traxxas Slash and Slayer)
  • Traxxas #5871R Off-Road S1 Racing
  • Traxxas BFG Mud-Terrain T/A (Traxxas Slash 4x4)

  • Pro-Line #1157-00 Mohawk SC

      &  JConcepts #3041-02 GooseBumps

Custom tire grooving and siping will be permitted WITHIN REASON. Modification of the sidewalls and/or carcass of a non-SC tire to fit an SC rim shell will not be allowed.

BODYWORK

All bodies should comply with the measurements set by ROAR SCT standards. Bodies are not required to match the chassis they were intended for. Bodies must resemble offroad-style fullsize pickup trucks, and fenders and bedsides should envelop the tread surfaces of all four tires when viewed from above and with the suspension in its full compression position. Bodies with breakaway fenders and bedsides are permitted as long as the tread surfaces of all four tires appear enveloped when viewed from above with the fenders and bedsides in place, as explained above. Bodies are not required to have a bedcage. In addition, front and rear bumpers must be securely attached to the chassis. Side nerf bars are encouraged but not mandatory. Additional bodywork put in place to prevent debris from entering the chassis (ex: inner wheel wells, firewalls, undertrays, chassis guards, etc.) are permitted. Wings and spoilers that do not  detract from the scale appearance of the body are permitted.
